First Day of Autumn
1To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. Ecclesiastes 3:1
The first day of fall brings a certain anticipation and excitement of cool bright weather, blue skies, football games, and caramel apples--of hikes in the woods and raking leaves--of a new reminder of what it is to be alive. Hope is a breathable, palpable, living thing on a day like this with sunshine and cool evenings. The stars tonight are a bright and visible reminder of the glory and mystery we are graced to participate in.
I am reminded of a hike with Adam in the early fall, I think, when Adam was 8 or 9 years old. The Red River Gorge, a special place. Someone (Bill? who'd a' thought it?) had persuaded Adam that he needed to haul three 2-liter (full) pop bottles on a 3-mile hike. I figured Adam would give up and complain, leading to an adult picking up the load. Needless to say, at the end of the hike the women were flabbergasted to discover that this little fellow had been a supreme trooper and done his duty. The dad and the uncle caught you-know-what for their role in this little drama of mind over body. Life is good.
Today, they put in a new pic for the medicine line because of some fear of infection. Adam had an hour and a half off the respirator. There is some hopeful reaction because of jerking his legs when pinched. Eyes continue to open, including when Bill was there.
Coming back around again, Rhetta got to hike in Cool Creek Park(?) today with Nancy and her boys, walking barefoot in the stream and throwing rocks with the boys. Life is good.

Dear Cousins,
Just thinking of all of you tonight. I always check out Adam's progress before I go to bed. Randy and I are meeting our sons in Kansas City for a car show this weekend, and I will miss the posts. Glad to hear that Adam is improving daily. I agree with Tami, ya'll HAVE to nurture your own bodies with rest and TLC! Our hearts go out to all of you,I really admire your strenth. Please tell your Mom that I'm thinking of her as well, and that I love her.

Praise God for this sweet memory and encouragement - a reminder of Adam's character and fortitude... and praise God for all of Adam's improvements and progress...One day at a time, right?
Good morning, Rhetta! I am so happy to hear Adam moved his legs a bit and all the progress off the respirator! God is so merciful! These hopeful glimmers are so full of joy! I am also so happy to hear you went hiking with Nancy yesterday! I know how you love nature and God's creation and Nancy's company! Her boys are so full of happines. I'm sure they brought a sweet splendor to the day. If you would like, I could pick you up from the hospital and bring you to Bible study on Thursdays so you don't have to move your car? Just a thought! Sending all our love and hope! And also celebrating all of Adam's progress, Laura
Dear Bill and Rhetta,
I am going to tell you a little story from the New England Green Days that I hope will put a smile on your face. Bill, you may or may not remember this but I remember it very well.
I was working as Office Manager in the East Granby Branch. You came to the office for a routine visit and you were your normal cheerful self. You said good morning to me and asked me how I was doing. Then you told me that you were going to introduce me to the "best looking guy that I had ever met" that day. Now, remember, this is pre-Tom and I was young and single. I was pretty excited about it and anxious to see who this was and what they looked like. Later that morning you got up from your seat and said "here he is". I heard the office door open, heard foot steps and saw......Rhetta holding this beautiful baby boy with tons of blond hair and big blue eyes and he was reaching our for his Daddy. You were 100% correct that day! How blessed you were to have him then and even more blessed to have him now!
All of our thoughts and prayers are with your entire family.
We love you.

As I read todays blog, tears came to my eyes. I suspected it was Ellis and not Tara writing as I recognized his style from our church devotionals. So many memories flood in about times gone by. Both good and bad. Hospitalizations and chronic health conditions of family members with all the ups and downs. All the laughter and sorrow. All the family gatherings, and all the milestones of life. Above all else, all the love and support that is family.
How blessed you all are. Thanks for sharing your stories. God's perfect peace to you all... He will provide for all your needs.

Dear Tara,
Your mother does not come to the office very often, but she is in today, and she told me about Adam.
Never having been a parent, but being the oldest of three boys, I can understand what a family of mom, dad, and three boys is like.
There is no way I can understand how all this feels for all of you. I am sure there is frustration and anger and a feeling of helplessness. In this world we have those thoughts, but we are only "passing through" on an eternal journey to be with our Maker, Mighty God.
Yes, God answers prayer, and Yes, He provides miracles, so I join you in praying Adam's family be granted a miracle for Adam's full robust recovery.
I ache for all of you, for Adam is my brother in Christ as surely as his blood brothers are his brothers.
I pray for Adam's well-being, for his being well. Nothnig else is quite so important now in our lives.
